But how do you add it to a WordPress website?

Sign up for a Google AdSense account

The first thing you need to do is go to google.com/adsense/start to sign up for an account. If you already have a Gmail account, you can use it to sign up. Your application will be reviewed by the Google AdSense team. When it is approved you can login to you AdSense account and get the ad code. This code is needed to display the ads to your website.

To add Google AdSense to WordPress, the first thing you need to do is click on the Ads menu located on the left column of your Google AdSense account and click ‘By ad unit’ tab. You then need to click ‘Create New Ad’. You will need to select an ad type: display ads, in feed ads, and in-article ads. If you are not sure which ad to use, select the ‘display ads’ option.

You now need a name for the ad unit and select the size and type of the ad. The name for the ad will be for internal purpose only. You can give it any name you want. You also need to select if the ad should be fixed or responsive. Responsive ads are the best because they work on any device and any screen size. Once you are done click on ‘Create’ button.

Google AdSense will generate the ad code which has a unique ad unit ID as well as your publisher ID. If your WordPress website has Google AMP version, you can copy the code for the AMP pages. Copy the ad code and paste it in plain text editor such as TextEdit or Notepad.

You now need to choose where you want the ad to appear on your website. Ads are mostly displayed on the sidebar. WordPress widgets will help add the ads to the sidebar. Go to Appearance>>Widgets page from the WordPress admin area. You then need to drag and drop the ‘custom HTML’ widget to the area you want and paste the Google AdSense code that you copied earlier.

That is all you need to do to add Google AdSense to your WordPress website manually. Google AdSense recently announced auto ads which means you paste a single code and Google will decide where to put it automatically. Google also decides how many ads to show, where and how.
